Covering an area of almost 30Km², and with an official 30,000 inhabitants, Benalmadena is just 19 kilometers from Malaga Airport. It’s easy to reach from both Malaga capital and International Airport by road, train or bus and its privileged position looking out onto the Mediterranean Sea, it is little wonder that it has grown so rapidly in size over the last 20 years and become so popular – especially with the British. It is always lively, but the busiest time of year is during the hot summer months, when holidaymakers swell the population by more than triple – up to 100,000 people.
Benalmadena beach heading down through Arroyo de la Miel takes you onto the coastal strip known as Benalmadena Costa, which runs along the sea front between Torremolinos (where the “Carihuela” area, famous for its specialty fish and seafood restaurants begins) and Fuengirola.
Overlooking the sea, separating Arroyo de la Miel with Benalmadena Costa are the beautiful gardens of La Paloma Park which covers over 200,000 square meters with a central lake where you can see many different types of birds, which are well cared for in these very beautiful surroundings. Inside the park is the Benalmadena Auditorium where many events are run throughout the year, including the Summer Music, Theatre and Dance Festival, which runs from the middle to the end of July. The Park also houses the Benalmadena Library, as well little bars, where you can rest and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere.
When the sea front is buzzing and you feel like a quiet walk, this is the place to come. Next to the park is the Ferria Ground, where the annual town fair is held in the month of August. This is also where the weekly flea market takes place every Friday morning. Right beside the park is Selwo Marina, where you can see dolphins, penguins and exotic bird life, making a great day out for the family.
Down on the sea front is where the majority of the large hotels, aparthotels and timeshare apartments are located. Although the majority of the many thousand of tourists to this area tend to book a package holiday, it is becoming ever more popular to rent an apartment from the thousands to choose from on the Internet or in UK newspaper and magazine advertisements. There are also many shops, bars and restaurants, as well as the Museo de Arte (Museum of Art).
